Systems thinking goes beyond standard organizational charts that establish a hierarchical structure defining who is on top and on bottom to define the schools’ work flow, patterns of interrelationship, and processes. Organizational charts can explain the chain of command or lay out prescribed steps in a set of connected events, but anyone who works in a school knows that both the chain of command and prescribed procedures are sometimes ignored. Why? Because there are other forces at work that change people’s behavior. These may include mental picture albums, mental models, paradigms, and visions and influences beyond the control of individuals or organizations (Senge, 1994; Barker, 1992; Glasser, 1990a, b, 1984).
