Many applications involve the optimal control of processes governed by parabolic partial differential equations. Above all, there are various problems involving the propagation of temperature or concentration fields. There are the practically important problems of the melting or solidification of bodies, crystal pulling directly from the melt (e.g., Stepanov’s method159), and other problems with moving boundaries. All provide nontrivial examples of controlled distributed parameter systems.
