Many classical problems of mathematical physics can be formulated as extremal problems for certain functionals. Such a formulation allows a natural definition of solutions of the corresponding boundary-value problem (generalized solutions); in addition, the formulation is well-suited to the use of direct methods of the calculus of variations.
