2-D Phase Unwrapping of Noise Contaminated Interferograms

Phase unwrapping of interference patterns is important in many applications such as surface profiling, SAR interferometry and optical interferometry, wavefront compensation in imaging through aberrating media, homomorphic processing and in inverse scattering when using the Rytov approximation. It is usually impossible to impose conditions of continuity on the wavefront to unwrap the interference pattern since wavefront dislocations cannot be avoided. It is necessary to localize these dislocations to the maximum extent possible. In this paper, we identify the use of so-called effective and ineffective zero locations to determine the phase unambiguously in neighborhoods near wavefront dislocations. We also propose a technique to help smooth and reconnect noisy and broken interference fringes, prior to unwrapping.
