Refractive Index Gratings in CA3MN2GE3O12

Abstract

Photoinduced linear birefringence (PLB) in the tetragonal calcium manganese germanium garnet Ca3Mn2Ge3O12 was observed for the first time by Gnatchenko et al. (1983). The effect was attributed to orient at ionally non-equivalent Jahn-Teller ions, which absorb linearly polarized light anisotropically. Thus the underlying mechanism is different from the photorefractive effect based on the electrooptic effect.
