Abstract
The radar surveillance group at DREO is actively involved in developing and fielding an airborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) system referred to as Spotlight SAR. Recently, the technical requirements for adding a datalink to the Compact SAR (CSAR) signal processing subsystem of Spotlight SAR have been examined. In order to efficiently utilize the available limited bandwidth of a commercially available link, some form of image compression is necessary. This paper presents preliminary results of applying state-of-the-art image compression techniques, such as fractals, wavelets and neural nets, to typical SAR imagery, generated by the CSAR signal processor.
