Abstract

An alternative Cable TV architectural approach to that of the presently planned Fiber to the Feeder (FTF) architecture is described for switched video-on-demand applications. This approach, which builds on digital technologies used for non-switched digital services, also enables an economic, smooth and scalable introduction of broadband multimedia services into evolving Cable TV distribution networks. The approach also addresses the present and future issues of interference ingress, privacy and security, power consumption, upstream protocols, testing and maintenance. Both modemization and new-build configurations using this approach are included.
