Release of Gangliosides in the Microenvironment and Angiogenic Response in Vivo
This is a summary of results obtained in experiments stimulated by the following observation: melanosarcoma cells injected in the center of a rabbit cornea migrate toward the periphery and as soon as they reach a distance of 1.5–2.0 mm from the limbus a large number of microvessels develop to colonize the neoplastic cell population. Thereafter, rapid growth of a solid tumor ensues. The objective of our experiments was to analyse the mechanism of this event on the assumption that by blocking angiogenesis the formation of a solid tumor could be avoided or impaired. The experimental approach was based on the following hypothesis: In the adult organism angiogenesis is a multifactorial event: the analysis of tissue composition at the onset of an angiogenic response may suggest which events have determinant infuence on the process.
