Neutrophilic Leukocyte Granules: From Structure to Function

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 336))

Abstract

The ability of each type of leukocyte to perform its special function depends on the synthesis of particular chemical substances during its maturation. Certain leukocytes, e.g., the granulocytes, synthesize proteins at regular intervals early in their maturation in bone marrow and store them for days in large cytoplasmic granules (Bainton and Farquhar 1966, 1970; Bainton et al., 1971). When appropriately stimulated, these cells can move from blood to tissues and, within seconds, the granules may release their contents into an endocytic vacuole or, by fusion with the plasma membrane, to the exterior of the cell. Thus, their major function in inflammatory processes is usually accomplished by endocytosis “eating”, or exocytosis “secreting” (Bainton, 1980).
