Abstract
The vasculitides include a multiplicity of syndromes characterized by inflammation and necrosis of blood vessel walls. Our lack of unterstanding the pathogenetic mechanisms involved in the development of the inflammatory lesions added to the marked variability observed in different cases of the same form of vasculitis have prevented the development of a universally acceptable classification of vasculitis. Yet, it is apparent that there are a number of clinical vasculitic syndromes which appear to be distinct processes.
