Abstract

The first seven chapter of this book were devoted to the concepts, system architectures, and technologies which underlie the field of broadband networks. In this final chapter, we shall qualitatively explore some of the multimedia applications that might benefit from, and drive the need for, wide-area, bandwidth-on-demand, broadband networks. These applications fall into two broad categories: network services and end-user applications. The latter can be further divided into three subcategories: people-to-people, people-to-machine, and machine-to-machine. Sometimes, an end-user application might span more than one of these subcategories.
