Biologic and Psychosocial Determinants in the Etiology of Alcoholism

  • Chapter

Abstract

General systems theory provides a conceptual framework for clarifying the multifactorial etiology and consequences of alcoholism. Existing in a common space—time continuum, a system is comprised of units with measurable relationships. In living systems, particles, atoms, and molecules, for example, are subsystems of the larger entities of cells, organs, and organisms of which they are comprised. The individual, his family, the community, and society also constitute systems that influence the individual’s functioning and behavior.
