Abstract

In Latin America, as well as in Venezuela, one of the most affected countries in the area, AIDS prevalence rate has been constantly on the rise, and women are becoming increasingly affected by the disease. In Venezuela in 1989 the male-female ratio was 13 to 1; three years later, in 1992, this ratio had been reduced by more than 50%: it was 6 to 1. In the great majority of these women, the primary route of transmission is heterosexual contact with bisexual or homosexual partners.
