Abstract

Foremost among the mental disorders affecting older adults are the diffuse or multifocal brain syndromes known as delirium and dementia. In delirium, cognitive disturbance is transient or fluctuating; symptoms develop rapidly, generally as a result of a change in medical state. In dementia, cognitive loss is more persistent; in most cases, symptoms have a gradual onset and a stable or progressive course.
