Abstract

In countries such as the United States, growing old has become a common experience. Average life expectancy at birth is now about 78 years for women and 71 years for men. Even those who are currently old can expect to live many more years; for example, at age 65, mean life expectancy is nearly 19 years for women and 15 years for men.
