The Coloration of Polypropylene Fibers

Abstract

Polypropylene, as produced, does not possess properties normally attributed to a fiber-forming polymer. Despite a relatively low melting point, it is not stable below melt temperatures and will degrade in UV light at room temperature, unless stabilizers are added. In addition, polypropylene has no dye sites and cannot be dyed by any conventional means to a colorfast product. Polypropylene properties have been progressively improved by use of an ever-growing variety of additives. Many dyeable systems have been developed and many patents issued but the problem of coloring polypropylene by making it dyeable has not been satisfactorily solved.
