Abstract

About a decade ago we turned our attention to a potential role of lactoferrin (Lf) in maturation and function of cells of the immune sytem. At that time Lf was mainly investigated for its role in protection of animals against pathogens and activation of some cell types such as phagocytes or natural killer cells. Isolated reports indicated its role in modification of mixed lymphocyte reaction and humoral immune response in vitro as well as inhibition of cytokines (interleukin 1).
