In-Plane Alignment and Critical Current Density in C-Axis Oriented YBa2Cu3O7-y Films Prepared by Sputtering
The in-plane alignment and superconducting properties in c-axis oriented YBa2Cu307-y (YBCO) films were investigated. YBCO films were prepared on the (100) plane of single crystals MgO in an argon-oxygen atmosphere by on-axis dc magnetron sputtering using a single sintered stoichiometric target. Two types of grain growth were seen on MgO (100) by mainly adjusting substrate temperature under the same conditions for the other deposition parameters. One is characterized by grains with YBCO parallel to MgO, which have grown at relatively low temperatures. The other is characterized by 45°-rotated grains in the substrate plane. The mixture of two kinds of grains significantly affects transition temperature Tc and critical current density Jc in films. The Jc was measured under various angular fields at various temperatures. In the angular dependence of Jc at magnetic fields, there is a Jc peak indicative of intrinsic pinning around the field direction parallel to the film plane for every film. However, when the applied field is tilted, films show different angular dependences of Jc. The relation of the angular field dependences of Jc to the grain structures for some films is discussed.
