Effect of V Additions on Bi2223 Phase Formation and Superconducting Properties of (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3Oz

Abstract

We found that a considerable amount of V added into Bi oxide superconductors greatly enhances the Bi2223 phase formation without any degradation of Tc. The added V is not included in the Bi2223 (or Bi2212) grains, but instead exists as Sr6V2O11 particles with diameters of 0.1 to several micrometers, in which the larger plate-like particles play an important role to promote the Bi2223 phase formation. Using Bi2223 powder with V we prepared Ag-sheathed tapes by the powder-in-tube method. The Jc of the tapes depends on V content and sintering temperature.
