Abstract
The powder-in-tube method was used to produce Ag-sheathed samples from two precursor methods to study the texture formation of the 2223 superconducting phase in Bi-system tapes. Experimental results showed that the texture of the 2223 phase has contributions both from growth and processing. The growth texture of the 2223 phase results from the texture of the 2212 phase, and the formation of the 2212 phase texture originated with the oriented growth of grains due to residual stresses produced during processing. A new, preprocessing technique and the addition of Ag powder improved the connectivity and texture of the 2223 grains, and therefore, the critical current densities of the composite tapes.
