Reactor Irradiations at Temperatures Below 6 K

  • Chapter
Advances in Cryogenic Engineering Materials

Abstract

The low temperature irradiation facility of the Munich Research Reactor allows performing reactor irradiations at sample temperatures below 6 K. In addition to the general experimental setup of the facility the paper describes in detail a particular experiment: the in situ measurement of the ultimate shear strength of various organic compounds being candidate insulator materials for a future use in the superconducting coils of a fusion reactor. First results indicate that all of these composites suffer a severe radiation induced degradation and that the effect of a thermal treatment at room temperature on their mechanical properties is small.
