Abstract
Saturated magnetic moment and magnetic susceptibility of Gd hydrides were measured in the wide range of hydrogen content. In the composition range O≤H/Gd<1.8, the samples are ferromagnets with Curie temperature of about 291K and the magnetization decreases with increasing hydrogen content. In the range 1.8≤H/Gd≤2.3, the hydrides exhibit antiferromagnetic behavior and the Néel point increases with increasing hydrogen content. In the range H/Gd>2.3, another antiferromagnetic phase originating from GdH2.9 coexists. The change in magnetic ordering temperature can be qualitatively explained on the basis of anionic hydrogen model and RKKY interaction.
