Abstract

The study of depression in adolescents has become a major focus of research within psychology, psychiatry, and related mental health fields. The wealth of new information and research on depression in adolescents presents a formidable challenge for the professional who wishes to keep up-to-date with current knowledge. Research on depression in adolescents has burgeoned across many scientific fields that can be conceptualized as encompassing a biopsychosocial perspective (Reynolds, 1992a, in press b). This research mirrors the many problem areas associated with depressive disorders, including biological, developmental, familial, psychological, social, somatic, and cognitive areas. Depressive disorders are serious forms of psychopathology in adolescents. For some youngsters, early onset of depression is a precursor to serious mental health problems and psychosocial dysfunction in adulthood. Furthermore, some depressive episodes in adolescents may lead to potential or actual life-ending outcomes.
