Abstract

Campylobacter fetus subsp. venerealis (C. venerealis) is a major concern in the cattle and sheep industries since infections with this organism can result in infertility (Penner, 1988). The chronic inflammation associated with C. venerealis infections is likely due to the persistence of the whole organism or its constituents within the host. Recently, proteinaceous or glycoproteinaceous bacterial S-layers have been implicated as factors enhancing bacterial virulence. In some Campylobacter fetus strains the Slayer appears to protect the infecting bacterium from serum killing and phagocytosis by PMN leukocytes (Blaser et al., 1991), whereas in other strains, the S-layer undergoes antigenic variation (Dubreuil et al., 1990). These functional attributes would facilitate persistence of campylobacters within a host and in the case of C. venerealis infections, contribute to the chronic inflammation.
