Part of the book series: Critical Issues in Psychiatry ((CIPS))

Abstract

For a period of several months, my colleagues and I discussed this question: Is there a need for a new book on adolescent substance use (ASU)* and adolescent psychoactive substance use disorders (APSUDs)† in the 1990s? In order to justify such an endeavor, we asked ourselves these questions:

  1. 1.

Is APSUD sufficiently distinct from adult PSUD to warrant a separate volume, given the early stage in which the study of adolescent substance abuse finds itself?

  2. 2.

What are the essential topics that should be included in such a book so that the volume is complete and updated without indulging in an encyclopedic retrospective data collection?

  3. 3.

In fact, how do we shy away from philosophical and ideological controversies that divide the various camps of addictionologists and yet include those pieces of experience and attitude that will benefit the reader interested in ASU and APSUDs?
