Abstract
Colonialism, Eurocentrism, capitalism, and modernity—can there be four more hotly contested words in present-day scholarship? Each word, with its myriad facets, angles, and expressions, provokes images, sparks controversy, and raises passions. Each subject is rife in meaning and rich in historical detail. Experts from many disciplines have spent long hours pouring over each one, holding it to this light and that to see what is reflected, to discover what may be learned when it is held in a slightly different way, perceived from a new side, looked at from a new angle.
