Abstract
Although the concept of partial hospitalization has existed for over a half century, its growth has not reached its described potential. The first day hospital was established in Russia in the early 1930s (Wortis, 1950). The emphasis was on rehabilitating individuals in regard to work. Day programs were established next in England and Canada around 1946 along a psycho-social therapeutic model. Vaughn (1985) documents how, at that time, day centers were a revolutionary concept, and that the idea flourished in the optimistic climate of opinion emerging in psychiatry during the 1950s. Day hospitals were seen as potential substitutes for large mental hospitals.
