Abstract

Of the Fagaceae family (beech family), the oaks are trees and shrubs (Quercus) essentially of the north temperate region. All of the more northern species are deciduous plants. Many of those in the southern part of the range have evergreen leaves and often are called live oaks. In Asia and the Pacific coast of North America, oaks are found in regions approaching tropical conditions. The oaks make up the greater part of the beech family.
