Safely directing enormous swarms of airplanes between America’s 6,000 airfields is one of the most costly and labor-intensive navigation problems any nation has ever had to face. A total fleet of 3,500 commercial jetliners serve America’s major cities, but 250,000 smaller civil aviation aircraft, mostly privately owned, are also hurtling across North American skies.
