Bacterial Contamination of Blood and Blood Products an Underestimated Problem

From the very beginning of transfusion practice bacterial sepsis due to blood transfusion was recognized. Currently the frequency of bacterial sepsis attributable to transfusion of contaminated blood products appears to be similar to that of transfusion-associated hepatitis C infections, but higher than for infections with Hepatitis B or HIV.
