Trace Metal Levels in Sea Water from the Skagerrak and the Kattegat

Unfiltered, acidified samples from a transection between Sweden and Denmark have been collected. The trace metals were preconcentrated by the freon-extraction method and determined by the graphite furnace technique.

The concentration levels found in Kattegat surface water (0–10 m) were: Cd, 0.2 nmol 1−4; Cu, 7.7 nmol 1 −1; Fe, 36–200 nmol 1−1; Ni, 8.7 nmol 1−1; Pb, 0.25 nmol 1−1; and Zn, 12 nmol 1−1. In the bottom water with higher salinity similar concentration levels of Cd, Ni, and Zn were found while the Cu level (3.3 nmol 1−1) was lower. The iron and lead levels in the bottom water were considerably enhanced.
