Abstract
Details of the composition of suspended matter in seawater are interpreted by a model describing suspended matter as a mixture of a permanently suspended fraction, consisting of small/low density particles and a fraction consisting of larger/denser particles, derived from the bottom. These fractions have different settling velocities and different composition.
This model assists in explaining data on particulate trace metals in the Rhine estuary and the adjacent coastal area and the role of these environments as barriers for the transport of metals from land to oceans in dissolved and particulate forms.
