Abstract

The highly anisotropic systems which are referred to as quasi one-dimensional conductors are characterized by rather small bandwidths (< 1 eV) and simple tight binding bandstructures. The thermoelectric power is therefore larger than in typical metals and more easily analyzed to obtain information on anisotropic bandstructure and cation-anion charge transfer. The metal-insulator transitions present in many of these systems are also easily probed by thermopower. Perhaps most interestingly these narrow band conductors show sizeable effects relating to the onsite Coulomb interaction. The correlated electrons retain a spin degree of freedom which is observable in the thermopower as an “entropy per carrier” contribution of \( \frac{k}{e} \) ln 2 or — 60 μV/K. All highly conducting TCNQ salts of the form R+(TCNQ) 2 saturate to this value at room temperature.
