Thermopower and Magnetothermopower of PtCo

Abstract

Measurements of the thermopower of dilute PtCo alloys containing from 0.31 to 3.74 at.% Co have been made over the temperature range 1.35 to 300K. The thermopowers of the alloys contain pronounced negative peaks which decrease in magnitude and move rapidly to higher temperatures as the Co concentration increases. Magnetothermopower measurements have been made on the same alloys for the temperature range 1.35K to 5K and magnetic fields up to 20kG. Application of a magnetic field is observed to shift the extrema of the negative thermopower peaks to higher temperatures.
