Abstract
At any temperature thermoelectric effects in transition metals are typically an order of magnitude greater than in “simple” metals, so that at least one branch of any commercial thermocouple consists of a transition metal or alloy. It was because of this large magnitude that many of the earliest studies of thermoelectricity were made on transition metals,* with the change in slope of the temperature dependence of S at the Curie point first observed in Ni more than a century ago.l Very briefly the values of S reflect large values of dℓnσ/dε which, in turn, are due to the strong energy dependence of the density of states N(ε) close to the Fermi energy, εF.
