Summary
This contribution deals with the specific topic of virtual social communities which are gaining more and more importance in our world. However, it does not proceed on the assumption of existing “real” social networks/relations being substituted by virtual ones. Rather, it is the possibilities and limits for virtual communities complementing the former kind that are to be discussed. By means of existing, constantly further developing communities the role of virtual communication for a discourse in the sense of “doing culture” is examined as an example. Virtual social communities offer to science forms and perspectives yet to be manifested: spaces for intercultural as well as less hierarchically structured discourses. In conclusion, a concrete model for the realization of this claim will be presented.
