Utilization of Monoclonal Antibodies in the Characterization of Monocyte-Macrophage Differentiation Antigens

  • Chapter
Immunology

Abstract

Cells of the monocyte-macrophage lineage perform diverse functions ranging from phagocytosis of microorganisms and other foreign substances, killing of antibody-coated erythrocytes or tumor cells (antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity, ADCC) (Poplack et al., 1976; Levy et al., 1979), spontaneous killing of unsensitized tumor cells (natural killing, NK) (Mantovani et al., 1979; de Vries et al., 1980; and Fischer et al., 1981), uptake and presentation of antigenic material in a form that is stimulatory to helper T lymphocytes (Unanue, 1978), suppression of immune responses (Allison, 1978), and secretion of certain complement components and other stimulatory products (Nathan et al., 1980; Beatty et al., 1981).
