A Hardware Overview

Decisions about what should be implemented in hardware and what can be handled in software will have the most impact on the performance of a processor. All processors support the same basic hardware functions since they must all fetch instructions and execute them. What makes one processor different from another is the way that the functions are combined and the way that the hardware is organized to carry out the functions. In a reduced instruction set computer (RISC) architecture, such as MIPS-X, the emphasis has been placed on building hardware that implements the common, simple functions quickly and then letting the software decide how the functions should be combined to carry out more complex operations.
