Abstract

Microalbuminuria and overt proteinuria in IDDM have been decisively established as indicators of various stages in diabetic renal disease. Persistent microalbuminuria defines the stage of ‘incipient nephropathy’, that is the stage that heralds progression to overt nephropathy in more than 80 percent of cases within a decade, with proteinuria and relentless decline in kidney function, unless intervention is undertaken. Subsequently an expanding research concerning patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes (NIDDM) has clearly demonstrated, that the course of complications and the implication of albuminuria differ in several respects between the two types of diabetes [1–3].
