Abstract

The continuous intraaxonal transport of axoplasmic materials is a major energy-requiring process within the normal nerve cell. Axonal transport provides axons and dendrites with the vast majority, if not all, of their constituent proteins necessary for the formulation of the cytoskeleton, for neurotransmission, and for membrane structure and function. Mechanisms also exist for the axonal transport of lipids, nucleic acids, amino acids, small neurotransmitter molecules, and larger organelles.
