Skin irritation—dermatitis—is commonplace; almost all children show various kinds of skin rashes or outbreaks as they grow up. Rashes are the most common reason for new mothers to bring their babies to the pediatrician. Rashes may have any of a number of causes and may take any of a variety of forms. The most common ones are those arising from contact with one of the literally thousands of substances capable of causing the skin to erupt. A red rash, blisters, or hive-like wheals—all with or without itching—may be the result.
