Itchy Eyes

Everyone, at some time or another, has probably had red, itchy eyes. There are scores of reasons for itchy eyes but dirt and foreign material or objects in the eye are most commonly responsible. The pharmaceutical industry, in contrast, has long recognized the economic possibilities that appear in red, inflammed eyes; drugstore shelves are filled with generally worthless eyedrops. Following are accounts of four children who were taken to allergists because of suspected allergies. All had similar symptoms, but a vastly different diagnosis.
