Abstract
A mixture of 87.2 g (0.5 mole) of methyl 5-(chloromethyl)-2-furoate (see p. 29), b.p. 114–116° /3 mm, and 300 ml of 90% acetic acid was prepared in a one-liter three-necked round-bottomed flask fitted with mercury-sealed stirrer and reflux condenser. The mixture was stirred while 98 g (1.5 g-atoms) of zinc dust was added in small portions over a period of 2–2.5 hours, and with continued stirring the mixture was then boiled for 20 hours (Note 1).
