Abstract
Most analog IC design includes careful design of the physical layout. The performance gained during the circuit design phase can easily be destroyed by a poor layout. As will be shown in this chapter, many switched-current designs have a simpler and much more regular structure than similar switched-capacitor circuits. By utilizing this regularity, and applying sound design rules, it is possible to shorten the layout design phase and maintain circuit performance. A further reduction of design time is possible if automatic layout generation is used. It will be shown in this chapter that SI circuits are well suited for layout automation. A simple CAD tool structure is suggested in the last section. The regular structure of SI circuits is helpful also when doing manual layout, and two layout styles suitable for manual and automatic layout are therefore described. Analog layout design has been thoroughly described elsewhere, i.e., [1-5], and a general treatment will not be included here. A few other authors have presented work regarding design automation for SI circuits: Hughes et. al. developed switched-current cells for design automation [6] and an automated design system for SI filters [7-8] using a Cadence framework, and O’Connor et. al. have developed a tool for automated design of switched-current cells [9].
