Abstract
Trauma is the leading cause of death in the United States for individuals from ages 1 to 34 years and remains the second or third leading cause of death to age 54 (1). One in four U.S. residents is injured each year, and 1 in 100 of these patients requires hospitalization (2). Approximately 10% of these patients meet the criteria for a trauma center admission, and most of the more severely injured patients receive care in a surgical intensive care unit (SICU).
