Abstract

Dyons are hypothetical particles in high-energy physics that carry both electric and magnetic charges and are realized as a special class of static solutions of field equations. In this chapter, we shall present such static solutions representing dyons. In §8.1 and §8.2, respectively, we introduce Dirac’s magnetic monopoles and Schwinger’s dyons in the context of the Maxwell equations. In the rest of the chapter, we use a variational method to prove the existence of dyons in two important non-Abelian gauge field theory models for which the governing equations are nonlinear and the action functionals are indefinite: in §8.3 we present the Julia—Zee dyons and in §8.4–§8.6 we obtain dyons in the Weinberg—Salam electroweak theory.
