Abstract
Non-bilayer assemblies are necessarily some form or other of transformations of lipid bilayers. A direct experimental analysis of their structure is not possible, due to their transient nature. A theoretical treatment without invoking arbitrary constraints is not feasible at the present. On the other hand the mere assignment of symbols is not sufficient for an understanding of the biological processes in membranes and for guiding the adaptation of these processes to technological and medical purposes.
