Abstract

One of the most characteristic features of charm particle physics is related to the lifetime of such particles, which is of the order of (5 – 10) * 10−13 s. Because of this, a particle with a momentum of 100 GeV/c may travel a distance on the order of a centimeter. This is a small distance from the standpoint of detecting the particle and measuring its properties. It is this short decay length that has led to the extensive use of high spatial resolution detectors both of the visualizing type, such as nuclear emulsions and special bubble chambers, and electronic techniques, such as semiconductor microstrips1 and silicon counters. It has also led to some interest in the possibility of using bent crystal channeling to deflect charm particles and thereby provide a new handle on the study of charm decay.2
