Abstract

Patterns of sexual behaviors are complex and culturally specific and the average age of sexual initiation and its consequences vary worldwide (Werdelin, Misfeldt, Melbye, & Olsen, 1995). These cultural and developmental factors relate directly to the negative consequences that occur from unprotected adolescent sex: high rates of teenage pregnancy, STDs, abortion, and HIV infection.
