Abstract

In this chapter, we outline the point-contact experiments with well-known Ce and U heavy-fermion (HF) compounds in the normal and in the superconducting (SC) ground state. The expression “heavy fermions” is used for the compounds for which Sommerfeld coefficient γ in the specific heat of electrons exceeds that for the ordinary metals more than hundred times showing enormous increase of the density of states at the Fermi level or appearance of the heavy quasiparticles. Point-contact investigations could help in better understanding the low-temperature normal, magnetic ordered, and superconducting (SC) ground state of the HF compounds. In the latter case, this study can illuminate their possible unconventional type of superconductivity. As described in Section 3.7, point contacts can be applied as a tool for direct determination of the spatial or directional dependence of the SC order parameter via mechanism of Andreev reflection at the S—N interface or via the multiple Andreev reflection in the S-c-S contacts. The exploring of Josephson effects in the S-c-S weak links can be used to provide additional information about the phase of a complex order parameter.
